The Author
Helen Walker says she is not Essex-born and bred, but has spent most of her life in the county; she grew up in Harlow and has lived in Broomfield, Chelmsford, for the last twenty or so years. She spent most of her career as an archaeologist for Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit, specialising in the study of medieval and later pottery.
Most of Helen’s reports on the subject have been published in the journals of the Essex Archaeology and History Society and in the East Anglian Archaeology journal. Her biggest projects were the writing up of two of the pottery industries of Essex, at Harlow and Sible Hedingham. It was while working on the distribution of this pottery, from kiln site to customer, that she began to take an interest in medieval routeways. Since retirement, she has pursued the subject and ‘Radwinter to Beeleigh Abbey’ is the result. It is part of a bigger project of hers on the medieval routeways of Essex that has yet to come to fruition. Other publications comprise a popular booklet on the Sible Hedingham pottery industry for Braintree Museum and ‘The Copperfield Trail’, a history trail for a new housing estate in Chelmsford.
