SOCIETY MEMBERS GO UNDERGROUND

On 17th June 2026 for their annual summer outing, a group from the Society took a dive into Royston Cave, which is ancient, man-made, decorated with extensive low relief wall carvings, and was re-discovered in 1742.

The group spent about one hour around 9 metres below the main town thoroughfare (Ermine Street) with an experienced & knowledgeable guide who took them through the history of the cave and explained the many theories & notions that have evolved over the years.

Said a spokesman for the Society ‘ It was an excellent & informative experience. Our guide gave us an in-depth analysis of the fascinating history of such a unique subterranean structure’.

Following the tour, the group moved to The Heath cafe for a delicious cream tea. One participant said ‘ They are the best fruit scones I have ever tasted’.
