Clavering-Excavating the Lost Castle

Introduction

Simon Coxall, Archaeologist & Dig Director of the Clavering Castle project, looks at the excavations and what happens next. The digging phase at the castle neared completion in time for a community open day on Saturday 21st June 2025.

Simon is well known to our members and has contributed to the Saffron Walden Historical Journal  He retired as Head of CID in Essex in 2015 and, following a number of years as a fieldworker on community and commercial archaeological projects, was awarded an MSc in Applied Landscape Archaeology from Oxford University in 2017. He is a trustee of Friends of Historic Essex.

What does it take to excavate the early Anglo-Saxon castle at Clavering in NW Essex. We’ll hear the intriguing results of the community excavation last summer and before any ground was disturbed by the geophysical, LiDAR, hydrological surveys and detailed historical research that underpins such a project. Saffron Walden Museum has produced a podcast in which Simon describes some of the finds that emerged and recounts an intriguing story about the site’s link to a local miracle.
