The grave at Ratlinghope of the last 'Sin-eater', Richard Munslow, (d. 1906). His job was to cleanse the sins of those who died unshriven by eating bread and drinking ale passed him across the coffin: "For thy peace I pawn my own soul". Unsurprisingly the church did not approve!

The Brownes were major landowners around Saffron Walden. On 1607 Sir Ambrose (1st bart) in married Elizabeth Adam, a wealthy Walden heiress. Most of his holdings were sold by their son Sir Adam in 1668-9, including the tenements that would become the Sun Inn - to Henry Winstanley
