The Littlebury Hamlets History Group met in one last night - St Peter's at Littlebury Green, sensitively converted into a church-cum-hall and well used after a good deal more than a century.

This ‘tin tabernacle’ in Lyonshall, Herefordshire, was built in 1860 using corrugated iron.

They served fast-growing industrial towns and cities in England of which only 86 pre-fabricated churches still survive.

They weren’t intended for permanent use, and most were replaced.

4 well-spent £ in a secondhand bookshop. Published in 1957, it remains fresh as a daisy, the clearest, most readable explanation of boots-and-maps research on English fields, villages, towns and parks that I know. I have learned much - and (1957 again) it is beautifully written.
