WELCOME
Welcome to the website of the Saffron Walden Historical Society, one of the oldest voluntary organisations in the town, founded in 1933 and still going strong today. You can read a complete History of the Society here, and join the Society here.
WEBSITE ORIGINS
This site was originally set up in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Society, to inform you about the current and past programme of lectures, the Journal (twice a year) and the history books published by the Society.
WEBSITE EXPANSION
The latest version of the website pulls together all resources available to both members and local historical researchers.
JOURNAL
The Journal is published each year in Spring and Autumn. See the Journal section for more information. Past issues of the Journal can be accessed in the Gibson Library, Saffron Walden – an index of titles of articles can be found on this website, together with a selection of articles.
LECTURES
The Saffron Walden Historical Society provides monthly lectures from autumn to spring at the Friends’ Meeting House, High Street, Saffron Walden. Meetings are free to members, visitors £2.00 (join now!). Lectures are monthly Jan-April (apart from December) on Wednesdays, starting at 7.45 pm. In addition there is a short talk at the Annual Meeting in May and a summer visit. Some winter lectures take place via Zoom. See the Events section for more information.
PUBLICATIONS
The Society has published a number of local history books under the imprint SWHS Publications.
OTHER RESOURCES
Please note that we are unable to carry out family or local history research for enquirers, but suggest a number of resources where further information may be found.
