SUMMARY:Saffron Walden Quakers-Feet Forward
DESCRIPTION:\n \nIntroduction\nThis talk is about Julie Milller’s Research into female Quaker networks in the 18th century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuiet Quietly With Feet Forward – By the mid-1640s many radicals were taking advantage of the new freedoms of religious thinking and one who became prominent was the charismatic preacher George Fox, who initially formed the ‘Children of Light’, which became the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers in 1652.\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nJulie Miller MA\nJulie gained a Masters at the University of Essex in 2020 studying 17th and 18th century Quakers in Essex and America. She is now studying for her PhD in History at University of Essex where she is researching the life of the Saffron Walden Quakers John and Mary Farmer and the network of radical Essex Quakers who went to America to fight slavery, and women Quaker ministers travelling in Europe in the early eighteenth century. Her research has been greatly supported by the Essex Society for Family History. ( https://www.esfh.org.uk/ )\n\n\n\nDate & Time of Meeting\nWednesday 23rd September 2026\n\n\n\n7.45 pm\n\n\n\nCost: Free to Members. Visitors £2.00\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\n\n\nJulie’s research is looking at three manuscripts produced by the Farmer family of Saffron Walden. John Farmer’s journal of religious conversion and travelling ministry (covering the 1660s-1714). Mary Farmer’s 1725 account of her travels in the Low Countries and Germany, and her daughter Mary Fulbig’s notebook recording visitors to the local Quaker community between 1731 and 1763. \nNote: The above featured image is the rear of Saffron Walden Friends Meeting House showing some of the gravestones. © Saffron Walden Historical Society\n
