SUMMARY:Borley Rectory – The most haunted house in England
DESCRIPTION:\nIntroduction\n\n\n\nFollowing a visit from a professional ghost hunter in 1929, a national newspaper declared in a bold headline, ‘Borley Rectory, the most haunted house in England.’ This brought a great deal of disruption to the quiet little north Essex village. To discover why the rectory was considered haunted, Bryan will take us back to the 19th Century and tell us about two successive rectors, the latter one, together with his sisters, were rather obsessed with spiritualism and claimed to have seen the ghost of a nun on several occasions. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nBryan Thurlow\n\n\n\nBryan is a seasoned speaker for U3As, Probus, Rotary, History Societies,, etc. With a background in professional theatre and drama lecturing, he has worked in Theatre, TV, and Theatre in Education, taking academic theatre to schools across East Anglia. He principally presents in  Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, & Cambridgeshire\n\n\n\nDate & Time of Meeting\n\n\n\nWednesday  24th September 2025\n\n\n\n7.45 pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n\n\nFree to Members. Visitors £2.00\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\n\n\nBryan’s presentations are rather unique. He is a great storyteller and in some of his pieces he introduces audiences to the voices of various characters. Indeed in others he plays the whole piece in character, giving a flavour of life in earlier times. A selection of his parts include a pearly King telling his evacuee’s story, a butler from the Victorian/Edwardian period and a dear old Suffolk gardener, complete with an authentic Suffolk accent.\n
